Abstract: The cachaça (a Brazilian distilled beverage made from sugar-cane) has a unique role in the narrative of Memórias do Cárcere, a book in which Graciliano Ramos reports his experience as a political prisoner from 1936 to 1937. From a counter-reading of the passages in which the beverage appears, an attempt was made to analyze the place that it occupies in the poetics of the work, recognizing it as directly associated to the activation of memory and imagination and as the carrier of a certain “freedom principle” that the author paradoxically wanted to find in prison. In this context, the tensions and distensions produced by the cachaça are part of an unending process of ethical adjustments of the narrator-character and of the modes of language through which the “I” is constituted. The analyses were performed in dialogue with authors such as Baudelaire, Benjamin, Candido and Pessoa.
