Abstract

This paper reviews the book Banzeiro òkòtó: uma viagem à Amazônia centro do mundo, published in 2021, by Eliane Brum. This work presents a critical reflection on the current Amazon, highlighting its importance as the “Center of the World” in a context of environmental crisis. The author, with over 35 years of journalistic experience, narrates her immersion in the Amazon territory and investigates the accelerated destruction of the forest, proposing a deep connection between body, mind, and nature. The work combines investigative research and personal accounts to unravel the struggle of traditional communities against exploitation and violence in the Amazon environment. By challenging cultural and temporal norms, Brum proposes an “Amazonization” of thought, and invites us to reflect on the centrality of the Amazon and the urgency of reconfiguring power and identity relations in today's world.

Walisson Oliveira, Federal University of Minas Gerais

PhD student in Literature: Literary Studies at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Master in Literature: Literary Studies at the State University of Montes Claros (Unimontes). Graduated in Literature - Portuguese from the University of Uberaba (Uniube) and in Journalism from the Funorte University Center (UniFunorte). Currently, he is a researcher on the research project "The critical production of Carlos Drummond de Andrade", under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Roberto Alexandre do Carmo Said.
