Avicena (980-1037) investiga as faculdades da alma, dentre elas a imaginativa e a estimativa, em várias de suas obras, dentre elas, o Livro sobre a alma (K. al-nafs). Em vista de distingui-las, são estabelecidos alguns critérios de diferenciação dos sentidos. Como apontar-se-á, a defesa da existência de um propósito fundamental não é suficiente para explicar as ações das faculdades da alma, pois outros dois elementos estão envolvidos: a posse de um órgão apropriado e a alteração causada pelo objeto peculiar a cada faculdade. Em seguida, após reconhecer os tipos de ações realizadas pelos sentidos internos, no caso, pelas faculdades estimativa e cogitativa, discutirei algumas dificuldades em torno das suas atividades próprias.
