Standards for cataloging rare books
historical evolution and current perspectives since the emergence of RDA

This work addresses the history of rare book cataloging, discussing the creation of norms and standards for cataloging from the 1960s to the present day. The research sought to understand the history of rare book cataloging and analyze its current context from the emergence of the RDA, to the development of the DCRMR. The methodology adopted presents a qualitative approach, was based on a bibliographic and documentary review and included an analysis of scientific production on the topic, which was collected from five databases: Portal Periódicos CAPES, SciELO, BDTD, BRAPCI and e -LIS. The bibliographic survey made it possible to observe the scarce bibliographic production on the subject: 46 texts were recovered, of which 10 were selected for analysis. The analysis made it possible to understand the importance of RDA as a milestone in the transition to a more updated and global cataloging standard, and the concern in developing a single standard that covers rare books. It is concluded that the emergence of the RDA brought the expectation of convergence towards a single cataloging code that takes care of the specificities of rare books; and that Brazil lacks translations of norms and standards for cataloging rare books, as well as discussions on the topic.
