Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the translation process based on Sperber & Wilson's Relevance Theory (1986/1995). The approach is applied to a literary text by Oscar Wilde containing ironic utterances and its translations into Portuguese. The analysis illustrates how Relevance Theory can help to account for communication breakdown in the translation of implicit irony.
