From Data Collection to Data Generation
Reflections on Modernity, Coloniality and Scientific Practices

Starting from a reflexive and dialogical proposal, this article threads a transdisciplinary debate (Nicolescu, 1999) on the development of research through a modern framework and its limitations, as well as on the use of decolonial academic discourses in contemporary research projects when in contrast with the actual practice of research in the real world. The article presents the narratives of the academic journeys of three researchers, navigating through the fields of Social Communications, Anthropology, History, Archeology, Applied Linguistics, Architecture and Sociolinguistics with the intent to expand concepts and reframe modern perceptions about scientific methodologies in non-modern times. The reflection approaches the relations between researcher and researchees, between theory and practice and between discourse and experience, suggesting a movement of re-enchantment (Bauman, 2003; Hutchings; La Salle, 2021) in several areas of life which is also found in the academic discourse, and that has direct consequences in the real world (Rajagopalan, 2010). At last, it concludes that keeping the decolonial proposals strictly within the theoretical-discursive stance is not enough.
