Abstract

The article examines evidence from two implementations of a university-level reading course in Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL), structured around discursive genres and implemented through Didactic Sequences (DS). The study is based on a qualitative analysis of students’ performance in both diagnostic and final assessments. The objective is to discuss the relationship between the course and each student’s performance in terms of text contextualization (author, purpose and other voices) and the analysis of its linguistic-discursive resources. The results indicate that students who initially demonstrated low performance in these areas in both implementations showed significant improvement after the systematic, intensive, and diversified pedagogical process, highlighting the potential of genre-based teaching for fostering critical reading skills in PAL.
