Participation in citizen science projects focused on observing biodiversity in school gardens can provide significant learning experiences about scientific practices. This study evaluated individual learning outcomes in citizen science and biodiversity, based on the following indicators: knowledge of scientific concepts, self-efficacy, and scientific investigation skills (biodiversity observation). The research involved 96 third-year elementary students who participated in a co-created citizen science teaching-learning sequence in the school context. Using a mixed-methods approach, the field research included participant observation in a full-time school in the ABC region of São Paulo. Data were collected through a quasi-experimental design, with pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, as well as students’ Research Diaries and the teacher-researcher’s Field Diary, and analyzed through content analysis. The results indicate that the school-based citizen science proposal was effective in enhancing students’ knowledge of scientific concepts, perception of self-efficacy in science, and scientific investigation skills (observation). These findings have significant implications for science education, highlighting the importance of pedagogical strategies that actively engage students in citizen science experiences, promoting their empowerment through a deeper and broader understanding of the scientific process.
