Abstract

Abstract: In this research, we analyze the insubordinated constructions in spontaneous Brazilian Portuguese speech, focusing on causal constructions, based on Construction Grammar (Croft, 2001, 2022) and the studies on insubordination found in the literature on the subject (Bossaglia; Mello and Raso, 2020; Evans, 2007; Mithun, 2008). According to this theoretical framework, the relationships between parts of the construction are purely semantic, and there are no syntactic relationships, only roles played within the construction. Since the data is authentic and representative of spoken diamesis, the occurrences were extracted from the C-ORAL BRASIL corpus (Raso; Mello, 2012), with a focus on enunciative justification constructions regarding their pragmatic function and semantic content. The results showed that the constructions establish semantic relationships between the main and the subordinate clause, so that syntax takes a secondary role, and the construction is seen as a result of language use. There also cases in which insubordinate clauses show a relation to another contiguous speech act, in which an apparent main clause is produced and therefore forms the semi-insubordinate constructions.
