The organization of social networks: family associations and mental health services

Abstract

This study aims to understand the role of associations of health service users and family members relative to Psychiatric Reform propositions, as viewed by family members. Entities involved were the Franco Basaglia Association - AFB (Sao Paulo), and the Brazilian Association of Friends, Family Members and Mental Health Patients - AFDM (Rio de Janeiro). Data collection included a review of documents about the creation and organization of both associations, and semi-structured interviews. Ten interviews of family members who occupy directing positions in the abovementioned associations were conducted. The investigation revealed that these associations are a support and solidarity network for family members. These associations are also the stage for family members to present their claims about public policies for mental health services. Family members of both associations (AFB and AFDM) share this position; they perceive these entities as instances for protection of the rights of users of mental health services and their family members.
