Abstract

This study describes the Nursing faculty’s point of view from public institutions in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in relation to elderly and gerontology concepts, program outline and duration of gerontology nursing courses and participation in research and extension activities. It was answered by 10 (76.8%) teachers. The data were analyzed using the Bardin14 methodology. The majority of the teachers (80%) are women, 70% of them have a M.Sc. and 20%, a Ph.D. degree. The duration of the nursing gerontology content varied. The courses’ main topics are: Gerontology nursing care; Principles of gerontology care; and the legal rights of the elderly. 30% and 40% of the teachers are involved with research and extension, respectively. The concepts of Elderly and Gerontology, given by the teachers, are almost identical to the most currently used concepts.
