Abstract

This study describes the foundation of the Hermantina Beraldo Nursing School - EEHB - and the strategies used by the first director, Celina Viegas. The period under study runs from the creation of the school, in 1946, until 1968, corresponding to the administration of Celina Viegas. The primary sources include written documents and interviews; then there is the bibliography on the history of Nursing. The description based on the written documents emphasizes some aspects of the foundation, implementation and consolidation of the EEHB, which followed some strategies to control students' activities with regard to discipline, posture and hierarchy. The institutionalized rituals in Brazilian Nursing convey a homogeneous image of the group, which enhances career opportunities.
