Abstract

Objective: to correlate social support and depressive symptoms with the health-related quality of life of men with cancer undergoing oncological follow-up. Method: a cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted in 2020 with 95 men diagnosed with cancer, receiving oncological care at a referral hospital in southern Minas Gerais, interviewed using the characterization instruments, the Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, the Social Support Scale of the Medical Outcomes Study, and the Beck Depression Inventory. Data were analyzed using Spearman's correlation test. The study was approved by an ethics committee. Results: there was a predominance of elderly, married men, with incomplete elementary education, former smokers, and diagnosed with prostate cancer. Regarding quality of life, Cognitive Function and Social Function presented the highest averages. Regarding social support, material support was the most perceived. The depression inventory revealed minimal intensity of depressive symptoms. Conclusion: a positive correlation was found between the Emotional Support/Information domain and Role Performance, and a negative correlation between Emotional Support/Information and Fatigue. Positive Social Interaction correlated positively with Role Performance and Social Functioning, and negatively with Fatigue and Financial Difficulty. The Beck Depression Inventory correlated positively with Dyspnea, Loss of Appetite, Fatigue, Pain, Insomnia, and Financial Difficulty, and negatively with the dimensions Cognitive Functioning, Social Functioning, Emotional Functioning, Physical Functioning, Role Performance, and Global Health Status/Quality of Life.
