Abstract

The article offers a substantial conceptual foundation of a special academic title called “Acknowledged Higher Knowledge” (Notório Saber in Portuguese), devised specifically for the master or knowledge of Brazilian traditional peoples and communities (Indigenous, Afro-Brazilian, Marrons, popular cultures, among others. The struggle for the Acknowledged Higher Knowledge is connected to the Meeting of Knowledges movement, aimed at including the masters of traditional knowledges as lectures in public universities, and which has already gained a national scope. The title Acknowledged Higher Knowledge offers a contribution to provide answers to three great challenges that universities face today on a global scale: a) decolonization of the Eurocentric model of the modern European university, b) the transition from disciplinarity to transdisciplinarity; c) the overcoming of the neoliberal model of the production of academic knowledge based on cognitive capitalism.
