interweavings and reconstructions of the food culture of Italian immigrants in São João del-Rei

The purpose of this article is to investigate how cultural interlacements and identity transfers take place through the eating habits of descendants of Italian immigrants. Is it possible to rebuild something on bases that have been practically erased? Memory and post-memory (HIRSCH, 2012) are the tools used to seek relationships with the past. The reconstruction process can be seen as an attempt to remake a lacerated past and, at the same time, as an opportunity for innovation. For Pollak (1992), memory is selective, not everything is recorded. It is a discontinuous movement that wanders in errancy, defined by Bhabha (2013) as translation and that shares the thought of Benjamin (2009). Based on the oral reports of members of six families of Italian immigrants in São João del-Rei, Minas Gerais – Longatti, Giarola, Lovatto, Tortoriello, Lombardi and Spinelli –, we seek to establish relationships between memories, reconstructions, cultural transfers and food.
