Abstract

This article examines the work and intellectual profile of Jean Améry through the metaphor of the castaway, understood as an expression of the existential collapse provoked by the concentrationnaire experience. The castaway Améry, stripped of homeland, language, and biographical continuity, is an intellectual committed to elucidating a self-marked by estrangement and the irreversibility of trauma. From this perspective, the article analyses the way in which Améry develops resentment as both an intellectual instrument and a vital necessity. Amery’s existential drift, his nautical “defeat”, articulated in his collection of essays At the Mind’s Limits, finds an extreme ‒and ultimately unsuccessful‒ narrative formulation in Lefeu or the Demolition, in which the conflict between memory, identity, and language acquires decisive intensity. Finally, the article argues that Amery’s trajectory constitutes an extreme moral response to the impossibility of reconciliation with the world that turned him into a conscious pariah, and that his reflection on voluntary death represents the tragic culmination of a life governed by the impossibility of return.
