Abstract

This study presents some discussions regarding paintings depicting the miraculous apparition of the Virgin and Child to Saint Anthony, found in churches in Minas Gerais from the 18th and 19th centuries. It addresses hypotheses regarding their imagery sources and the use of images as a means of disseminating religious and political discourses and precepts. Through comparative analyses and identification of similarities between the composition of works created in Rome, Portugal, and Minas Gerais, the likely imagery source of the paintings in the Santo Antônio de Ouro Branco and Santa Bárbara Parish Churches is established.
