Abstract

The main objective of this article is to reflect on the painting "Ecstasy of Saint Francis" by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610). The work represents one of the most recurring scenes in the vast repertoire of Saint Francis' iconography, the stigmatization. To do so, it will address some biographical traits of the painter and some characteristics of his painting, as well as elements of hagiographic narratives and historical problematization of the representation of the stigmata of the saint of Assisi. Finally, starting from the painting in question, it will present elements that indicate continuities and ruptures in the forms of representation of this type of iconography from the model of Giotto di Bondoni to the post-Tridentine council period and its influences.
