This qualitative research aimed to verify the impact of training in the use of the Capes Journal Portal on the level of information competence of students. To develop the study, we started with a literature review on the Capes Journal Portal and the actions promoted by the UFMG University Library to promote development in accessing and using the Capes Journal Portal. Next, the research presents the theoretical basis of studies on information competence, information retrieval and the construction of search strategies. The research sample consisted, in the first stage, the pre-training test, of 14 students who had voluntarily signed up for the Capes Journal Portal search/use training offered to the UFMG community. After the pre-training test, the students underwent a single session of instruction. Seven of the 14 students who took part in the initial stage took part in the second stage of the research, the post-training test and interviews. The data was obtained and analyzed based on the second standard of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. The results led to the conclusion that participation in training sessions positively influences the achievement and development of information competence.
