Abstract

This essay explores the aspects of transparency, opacity, and intermediality in the works of Visconde de Taunay (1843-1899), with an emphasis on the use of framing as a pictorial marker. The author manipulates these concepts to create multiple layers of meaning. In the description of nature, vocabulary and metaphors that refer to the visual arts produce vivid images that evoke painting. The novelist directs the reader’s gaze, influencing their aesthetic perception. By comparing passages from both nonfictional texts such as A retirada da Laguna and Paisagens brasileiras and the novel Inocência, elements that refer to descriptive clarity and interpretive complexity are highlighted. The interaction between transparency, opacity, and intermediality makes Taunay’s writings rich in meaning and open to various interpretations. This study investigates the techniques employed by the author, which require the reader to engage in a dynamic process of meaning construction.
