Questions of “Form” in Portuguese Postcolonialism and the Legacy of EduardoLourenço’s Thought

This essay examines Eduardo Lourenço’s concept of the unthought in relation to the African colonial past and its contemporary repercussions. It explores the absence of formal – and even grammatical – awareness of this traumatic legacy in Portuguese society, showing how the unthought sustains the inability to critically reflect on colonial violence. The essay also discusses the link between this unthought and the unconscious nature of racism in Portugal and Europe, highlighting the difficulty of articulating racial violence – both institutional and everyday – and the persistence of exclusionary languages, codes, imaginaries, and aesthetics. The enduring presence of neo Lusotropicalist rhetoric further reinforces these exclusions. Finally, the essay analyses how new generations of African and Afrodescendant thinkers and artists in Portugal mobilize decolonial grammars to name the unspeakable and bring the repressed into consciousness, reclaiming the inwardness historically denied to Black populations under colonial oppression.
