Raúl Gonzáles Tuñón “On the Wings of Crítica”: Crimes and Heroic “Adventures” in the Chaco War

This article examines the Chaco War (1932-1935) coverage published by Raúl González Tuñón in the daily Crítica in October 1932 as a stringer and “special” correspondent. First, it observes the fictionalization, the narrative and poetic register, as well as the journalistic uses and redefinitions of the mixture of popular genres in the mass media to relate “el infierno del Chaco” (Chaco’s hell). Besides, a witness and reporter’s appeal and the creation of the enunciation subject of the fictionalized articles on the South American conflict: an expository voice, a “we” that in many cases “bears witness” in agreement with the “voice” in Crítica and with “the Paraguayan nation”, but which at the same time defines an intellectual image of Tuñón himself, the figure of public intervention of the witness and spokesperson, pacifist poet.
