Camus’ The Plague in Dialogue
Epidemics of the Past, Pandemic of the Present

In this article, I examine Albert Camus’ novel establishing a dialogue between the novel and the present and with other books. By imaging the city of Oran, in Algeria (then French), overrun by the plague, Camus makes an allegory of the feeling of imprisonment and exile experienced by the French population during the Second World War German occupation. Living in isolation and confinement during the months of COVID-19 has sharpened our sensitivity, thus enhancing our ability to read and appreciate this novel today.
