Ainda que se possa considerar como premissa que a comédia é um gênero que possui pouca receptividade crítica no Brasil, não podemos deixar de mencionar a importância para seu estudo do conjunto da obra da professora, dramaturga e pesquisadora baiana Cleise Mendes. Autora de uma das principais referências sobre o cômico e a comédia – A gargalhada de Ulisses: a catarse na comédia (Perspectiva, 2008) –, há mais de quarenta anos ela se dedica não só à docência na Universidade Federal da Bahia e à produção teórica sobre o drama, mas a uma prolífica produção dramatúrgica. Autora das premiadas A terceira margem (1981), Castro Alves (1994) e Joana d’Arc (2010), ela também escreveu inúmeras peças cômicas, igualmente populares, dentre as quais se destacam O bom cabrito berra (2003) e Marmelada: uma comédia caseira (2003).
