Framed within the context of sugarcane civilization, Claribalte Passos’s short stories develop under a lordly worldview, in which traditions, popular beliefs, the slaveholding logic, and the fogo morto acquire special relevance. His book Atrás das nuvens, onde nasce o sol (1977), part of the “Ciclo da cana-de-açúcar,” reveals a strong symbiosis between text and context, illuminating rural life in Pernambuco, particularly in the region of Caruaru, where the culture of believing in supernatural figures and superstitions prevails. This perspective supports the aim of this article: to analyze the short story “O lobisomem” in light of myth. Based on theoretical approaches that confirm the role of myth in literature, the study examines how this category is represented in the author’s fiction, rooted in Northeastern Brazilian beliefs. The analysis also highlights Passos’s narrative strength, whose forgotten works deserve renewed study and recognition.
