The Rise and Fall of Classical Theatre

Classical theatre has dominated European stages for about 300 years. It has achieved its maximum expression in France during the years of Louis XIV’s government. As a matter of fact, Corneille’s tragedies together with Racine’s plays and Molière’s comedies are the glorious heritage of that period that still remains in our days. The author reflects about the rules that have led the dramatists of that age trying to show how their application in a strict sense ended up provoking the decadence of classical theatre. Studying writers like Voltaire, Beaumarchais and Boileau along with commentators such as Ernest Cassirer, Isaiah Berlin and Anatol Rosenfeld the author tries to revive the main ideas of the rise and the fall of classical theatre.
