The currently flourishing literary Afro-Brazilian production highlights an important element of its identitarian construction: the rescue of African cultural memories. Silenced and repressed for centuries, these memories have resurfaced in recent years, even though they never truly left the collective imagination. To analyze the nature of these “fluxes and refluxes” (Pierre Verger) between Afro-Brazilian literature and African cultural references, we will study three contemporary works. The novels Torto Arado (2018) by Itamar Vieira Júnior and Água de Barrela (2018) by Eliana Alves Cruz will allow a discussion about the survival of memories linked to Afro-Brazilian religions, despite successive attempts at erasure. Next, we will reflect on religious racism, with the short story “Ogum à beira-mar,” by Jeferson Tenório. For this, Sidnei Nogueira’s theory on religious intolerance (2020) will be a fundamental starting point.
