The article analyses the civilizational barriers that limited the understanding of Rabindranath Tagore’s work in Latin America. At first, the article assesses the impact of Tagore’s trip to Latin America in 1924 and the Latin American personalities that echoed in their lives and work, the Bengali poet’s mystical lyricism and socio-political-educational universalism. Secondly, the article focuses on some of the principles that should govern the correct understanding of his work and the unique case of Brazilian poet Cecilia Meireles as an example of fulfillment of those principles in her indirect dialogue with the Nobel laureate poet from India.
