Abstract

This work analyzes the novel Cereus Blooms at Night, by Shani Mootoo, which narrates the story of characters from India that immigrated to the Caribbean as indenture laborers. Relying on concepts of gender performances, it discusses the representation of these characters whose experiences are marked by violence and exclusion that are related not only to their diasporic experiences, but also to their sexual orientation and the unsuitability of gender roles to which there are submitted.
