The Translations of Thomas Hardy’s Short Stories in Brazil

This paper proposes a study of the only three short stories by Thomas Hardy translated into Portuguese and published in Brazil. They are “The three strangers” (“Os três desconhecidos”), translated by Afonso Arinos de Melo Franco; “The melancholy hussar of the German Legion” (“O hussardo melancólico da legião alemã), translated by Aurélio Buarque de Holanda Ferreira and Paulo Rónai; e “Barbara of the House of Grebe” (“Bárbara, da Casa de Grebe”), translated by Alexandre Hubner. Published in different thematic anthologies and in different decades – 1940s, 1980s and 2000s, respectively – the translations are examined according to the thought of André Lefevere (2007) that translation strategies are determined mainly by the translator’s ideology and by the leading translation poetics at the time. Therefore, the aim of this paper is twofold: first, to reflect on the Brazilian image of Thomas Hardy as seen through those translations; second, to examine the translation poetics that support that image.
