William Wilson, theory of the fantastic, psychoanalysisAbstract
This essay intends to examine Edgar Allan Poe’s “William Wilson” considering the theory of the fantastic. One of the main characteristics of this literary genre is to create a sense of hesitation due to the ambiguity generated between the tension of real and unreal within the narrative. The essay also draws on psychoanalysis to understand how the concept of forclusion may return in the shape of horror. In this tale, the concept of double is the central element that makes the character unaware in relation to the formation of his subjectivity.
