World War I, diary, fictionalizationAbstract
Nearly every day, during his four years in First World War, Ernst Jünger noted his observations in small booklets which afterwards served as basis for his book Tempests of Steel (In Stahlgewittern) of 1920 and the subsequent six revisions until 1978. This book has always been seen as an ideological manifestation in the German context between the wars, but it has also attracted interest because of its drastic description of violence and its imagetic language. In 2010 an annotated transcription of the original diary, including the coleopterological registers of the amateur researcher, was edited by Helmuth Kiesel. Since critics have considered the book either a kind of revised diary or a fictionalization, the presente article aims to compare the annotations with the first version of Tempests of Steel. Besides the question of fictionality it will be analyzed in which way and degree the texts diverge in extension, matters, style, narrative voice and ideological colouring.
