Memories of War Due to Shock: Störfall, by Christa Wolf

This paper attempts to analyze the relations between memory and war as a fictional strategy of the German author Christa Wolf in Störfall (Accident), a work published in 1987, shortly after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred in the Soviet Union in 1986, more than 25 years ago, which intensified the movement against the use of nuclear energy. The shock caused by the consequences of the explosion of the reactor – the contamination of the population and large tracts of land, the radioactive cloud approaching the European continent – serves as a starting point for a writing that reflects on the fate of humanity, on wars and what would be the “blind spot” of our civilization.
