Abstract

The concepts of gaze movement, and of complementarity between object of gazing and way of gazing, inform the study of passages from both Thucydides and Polybius, in which they write about their own political failures. This paper avails itself of a comparative and historical-philological approach, and advances an alternative to traditional narratological analyses current in the studies about those historians.
