This essay aims at discussing the way elements of utopia as a literary genre are incorporated in the works of English fiction writer, H. G. Wells. Initially, we briefly address the relevance of the genre to the development of another genre, science fiction. Furthermore, we point out how XIX century fictionist re-read utopia genre under the light of their historical context, heavily marked by scientific rationality, tending towards the elaboration of dystopic narratives, as presented on Wells’ works. The last part focuses on the interpretation of one of Wells’ short story, “The country of the blind”, highlighting the ways this narrative embodies, renews and subverts the elements of the utopia genre.
