This paper examines the use of the formula mire (e) veja in J. Guimarães Rosa’s Grande sertão: veredas, specially its thematic resonance and pragmatics. It is argued that the formula is central to how the narrator Riobaldo communicates his past experience. In a further step its dynamics is compared to the formulaic language of Homeric poetry.
