Such is the force of the romance in Walter Scott that it was able to give rise to two antagonistic lines of force: one tending to situate it within the whole of Western literature, reviving ancient archetypes (Frye); another one which consider it the quintessence of the historical novel because it represents crucial moments of the capitalist society between the 18th and 19th centuries (Lukács). In light of this contrastive theoretical background, this paper intends to analyzes Waverley (1814), the most influential work of Scott, in comparison with As minas de prata (1865-66), the most ambitious novel by José de Alencar and that makes use of similar narrative strategies.
