Voices of contemporary literature have been drawing attention to the “strange familiarity” between non-human and human animals, a narrowing that shakes Humanist precepts and offers a relevant point of view for the discussion about othernesses. The questions derived from such contiguity offer strategic perspectives to (re)think literary productions that deal with both former inequalities and post-modern demands, as mentioned by Néstor Garcia Canclini. Considering these elements, this study aims to discuss the issue of animality as a kind of interpretative key capable of providing new analytical angles on repeated topics in current Hispano-American literature, more specifically in contemporary Mexican literature. The development of this analysis will have the novella Salón de belleza (1994), by Mario Bellatin, and the short story “Guerra en los basureros” (2013), by Guadalupe Nettel, as fictional references.
