We discuss the relations between theater and History from the study of the play Secretário d’El Rey (1904), by Oliveira Lima. Although it is the only Lima’s production in the genre and has never been staged, the play is a relevant case in this regard since it articulates both the experience of Oliveira Lima with the late nineteenth century Portuguese theater and with his work as a historian. In addition, seeking to combine vivacity with fidelity and with the spirit of an era, Oliveira Lima concentrated on the exploration of historical characters, by dramatizing the relationship between Alexandre de Gusmão and D. João V, motivated by a fictional context.
