The translation, through which we build relationships with others, implies choices based on ethics. Talking about ethics in translation is always challenging, since transporting a text from one language to another inevitably leads to thinking about the limits of one’s own possibilities and the recognition of the nature of translating – hermeneutics? dialectic? political? epistemological? According to Berman, ethics “consists in defining what’s ‘fidelity’” (2002, p. 17), that is, it resides in the process of reflecting on the choices to be made; in the construction of possible world hypotheses (ECO, 2003, p. 45). Based on these premises, the objective of this study is presented: to think about ethics in the text translation process De contagione et contagiosis morbis et curatione [Contagion, contagious diseases and their treatment] published in 1546 and written by the physician, philosopher and poet Girolamo Fracastoro (Verona, 1476 or 1478 – Incaffi, 1553), to Brazilian Portuguese.
