Joris-Karl Huysmans, Paris, myth, urban landscape, parisian type, flâneurAbstract
Huysmans participated in his own way in the literary discourse that made Paris the poetic place par excellence and gave it a mythical character. Parisian by birth, he chose the capital as the setting for most of his novels and made his hometown the subject of many descriptive texts, where he appears as a Baudelairean flâneur. Fascinated by the old Paris, he preferred quiet and melancholic corners, popular neighborhoods, even suburbs and denounced the transformations of the Second Empire. Naturalist observer of the big town, he devoted himself, especially in his first works, to painting the urban life in its deep reality, even in its most sordid and trivial aspects. Its pages, those that celebrate certain urban landscapes like those who describe Parisian types, offer a very personal vision of Paris at the time, which is influenced by the pessimism of the author.
