Abstract

From the reading of the essay “Herculano Translator and Interpreter of European Romanticism”, by Fernanda Gil da Costa (2013), we elaborate this essay. Here we use the word translation not only literally, or in Latin etymology (traductio, -onis: transfer or passage), but also freely, in the broad and even figurative mode of reading, interpretation and signification. In this case, it is the translation of Romanticism, particularly the first phase in Germany, as a mediation between nations, languages and cultures. In this context, we aim to contribute to disseminate and value a recognized dimension, but rare and occasionally referenced in Alexandre Herculano, that is, his Germanist aspect, as a translator and interpreter of Romanticism in Portugal.

Hugo Lenes Menezes é doutor em Teoria e História Literária pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), sob a orientação do Prof. Dr. Paulo Franchetti, com estágio pós-doutoral em Estudos Comparados de Literaturas em Língua Portuguesa pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP), sob a supervisão do Prof. Dr. Benjamin Abdala Jr., e com aperfeiçoamento pelo Centre d’Approches Vivantes des Langues et des Médias (CAVILAM) de Vichy, França. Integra, também, a Deutscher Lusitanistenverband (DLV) e o Grupo de Estudos de Adaptação e Tradução (GREAT/CAPES/USP). É professor titular do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Piauí (IFPI).
