Resumo: Este artigo comenta o livro La mémoire et la main [A memória e a mão] (1974-1980), de Edmond Jabès, em particular o poema “Toujours cette image” [Sempre esta imagem]. O comentário parte da busca do poeta pelo primeiro vocábulo, ou pela palavra original, e alimenta-se das reflexões da filosofia da linguagem (Benjamin, 2011; Derrida, 1967) e da visão transcendente da palavra em culturas ágrafas (Kopenawa & Albert, 2015). Jabès, judeu egípcio exilado na França, tem o desterro como motivo central em sua obra. O deserto é metáfora da página em branco e a escrita aparece como habitação. A exposição será acompanhada pela tradução do poema em português e pela meditação sobre a tradução poética, também ela habitada pelo desterro. Há um aspecto fugidio nas palavras, uma dificuldade de fixá-las, compatível com o estado de errância do poeta. Em seu rastro, o tradutor vagabundeia, temeroso de enraizar-se, tentando em vão reter as palavras escorregadias.
