Thersites, the Clueless Mortal

We propose a study of the character Thersites (Homer’s Iliad) as a comic prototype of characters revisited and studied by various poets and theorists. The figure has been identified in numerous texts as a comic double of Achilles (Thalmann, 1988, p. 25 and, apud Lesser, 2023, p. 70; Willcock, 1978, p. 200; Kirk, 1985, p. 139-141; Lowenstam, 1993, p. 78-80; Frade, 2024, p. 16). This article looks at Thersites in terms of the types of behavior described by Theophrastus in Characters and proposes, in order to better typifying the character, a metaplasmic translation Iliad 2, vv. 225-242, i.e. a translation that prioritizes metaplasms and the Greek linguistic variants used by Homer, in order to translate the Greek soldier’s “venting” scene into Brazilian Portuguese.
