O Romance: entre a história oficial e a alternativa

Este artigo analisa duas hipóteses distintas a respeito do desenvolvimento histórico do romance no Ocidente. A primeira delas, a que parece ser a mais célebre, pode ser sintetizada pelo estudo A ascensão do romance, de Ian Watt, que situa a origem do gênero romanesco na Inglaterra do século XVIII. No entanto, várias visões contrárias a essa tese surgiram no interior da própria crítica literária inglesa, especialmente os estudos de M. A. Doody (The True Story of the Novel: an Alternative History) e Michael McKeon (The Origins of the English Novel 1600-1740), apontando para uma “história alternativa” do romance, baseados no pressuposto de um desenvolvimento mais amplo da prosa de ficção, que remeteria aos textos da antiguidade e dos países orientais.
