Abstract: The cut between seeing and telling presupposes the existence of two incommensurable modes of constituting reality. However, we do not accede to visibilities or statements other than through the bonding by which the other is given. It is in poetry that this process, always tinged by some fascination or surprise, presents and amplifies itself, and that is why in poetry the thought of the image is inseparable from the interrogation of language, especially of what in language is potentially destruction of verisimilitudes and ability to create sense out of the abyss, out of the gistless instant of decision. In the present essay, I intend to think over that process on the basis of some distinctions between different regimes of images and the way they breed different conceptions of memory and world as unity received/ handed over as heritage.
Keywords: vision; image; memory.
