O leilão do lote 49, de Thomas Pynchon, e “Cidade de vidro”, de Paul Auster, divergem da ficção de mistério tradicional em termos de personagens, estrutura e estética. Ambos têm detetives incomuns que descobrem mais sobre si próprios e os Estados Unidos do que sobre um crime ou um culpado; ambos negam uma solução final ao oferecerem possibilidades múltiplas; ambos comentam a natureza da ficção de detetives segundo a visão de mundo moderna e a pós-moderna. Essas divergências os caracterizam como histórias de antidetetives, em que uma descoberta da verdade é frustrada.
