Violence as Aesthetic Identity in The Argentine Literary Text

It presents a discussion on the romantic characteristic of creating a nation's identity in the short story El matadero by Echeverría. At first, it is noticed that these arching for local color, for what it would represent a nation, has already become an important featurein Argentine literature. This search is revealed on the aesthetic level, when violence is placed as a typical element of Latin American history and literary writing. Echeverría goes beyond the nation’s first years of independence and its troubled reality, aesthetically revealing this violence in the short story literary writing. Subsequently, contemporary texts are brought to El matadero, such as Facundo de Sarmiento (2011) and the book of essays by Ébelot (1992), in order to show how Echeverría forges the theme of violence in a text that denotes features of realistic aesthetics, but converges within the romantic scheme of searching for a nation’s identity.
