A partir das definições do termo “negro” e do conceito de Literaturas e Artes negras, o texto faz um breve histórico das artes e das literaturas africana, desde o início até a contemporaneidade. Investiga a função dessas mídias na cultura ocidental e nas produções pós-coloniais, tanto as produzidas no próprio continente quanto as criadas nos países colonizadores, ilustrando um dos momentos históricos do continente africano, por meio de duas obras de autores nigerianos: o poema Berlin 1884/5 de Niyi Osundare e a instalação Scramble for Africa, do artista Yinka Shonibare. Ambas as obras se referem ao passado colonial da África e dialogam entre si, ao apresentarem como tema o mesmo episódio que dividiu o continente africano no século XIX, a Partilha da África.
