This article offers a reading of Alice Walker’s Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart (2004), focusing on the spiritual discoveries of the novel’s protagonist, who comes into contact with Indigenous knowledge systems throughout her journeys. It examines how communion with nature is articulated with spirituality and the demand for resistance and transformation, proposing the concept of Decolonial Eco-Ethics as a critical framework to help explain Walker’s novel. Through this process of enlightenment, the protagonist develops new reflections at a deeper level and expands her self-understanding, which I term Black Multiconsciousness. Based on these analyses, the article concludes that Now Is the Time… (2004) can be effectively read through a decolonial approach (Maldonado-Torres (2020), Grosfoguel (2020), and Bernardino-Costa (2020)), combined with Afro-Amerindian epistemologies, such as that of Ailton Krenak (2022), equally employed as an analytical support in the article.
